Are you flexible and adaptable towards your intimate partner?

In a brilliant aphorism by Zora Neale Hurston in Their Eyes Were Watching God, she describes the need for adaptability in our relationships. Janie, the protagonist, is an innocent, a hero, and a survivor who would not “keep her place” or “stay down.” Yet, she understood how powerful flexibility and adaptability is. She said:

Love is like the sea. It’s a moving thing, but still and all, it takes its shape from the shore it meets, and it’s different with every shore.

Zora Neale Hurston, 1891-1960
